About Adriatic Coast

The Slovene Riviera is relatively short but full of surprises; natural beauty abounds such as the 80m Strunjan Cliff and the historic Secovlje salt-pans (on the border with Croatia) which are a sanctuary for over 100 bird species. The small resort towns of Piran and Izola (plus the port town of Koper) with their mediaeval town centres, draw in visitors looking to relax and enjoy the atmosphere, while Portoroz has many modern hotels, a fully equipped marina, thermal baths, a casino and a large programme of cultural and sporting events throughout the summer.

Izola

An old Mediterranean town nestling on the southwestern coast of the Gulf of Trieste, where the traditional activities of fishing and winemaking still go on today. The turbulent history of this fishing town has created beautiful architectural treasures that take you back in time to when Izola was still a small island. Museums, galleries and art studios will take you to the world of Istrian arts and crafts.

The picturesque countryside on Izola's doorstep is renowned for its gastronomic delights, which can be discovered in a number of local restaurants and tourist farms, most with spectacular views of the Gulf of Trieste. This hinterland offers countless opportunities for walking and exploring the natural beauty of the Istrian hills, adorned with lovely stone houses and old churches. You can visit these places on foot, by bicycle or even on horseback.

PARENZANA - "The path of health and friendship"

The thin, winding thread of track that connects Trieste with Poreč made a great contribution to the economic development of Istria, its 123km of railway left an indelible mark on the entire area. Today, the entire route of the former railway has been cleared and is suitable for hikers and cyclists, along the trails there are numerous resting places and sightseeing spots.

Piran

A seaside town with rich cultural heritage, evidenced by its walls with seven gates leading into the town (First Rašpor Gate, Second Rašpor Gate, Marčana Gate, Milje Gate, Dolphin Gate, Field Gate, and the baroque St. George’s Gate), unique architecture all around and in the town museum which is proud of its precious archaeological, ethnographic, historical, and artistic artefacts. Piran is a town which has inspired and excited numerous artists throughout the centuries who have left their mark on the town. One of the most famous of them all is the composer and violinist Giuseppe Tartini who was born in Piran and after whom the central town square was named.

You can spend your free time by getting to know the marine life at the Piran Aquarium or you can relax at the Tartini Theatre or in numerous galleries. For fun-loving visitors, Piran offers a large number of sporting events and spectacles (Piran Music Evenings, the International Ex Tempore of Painting, Piran Days of Architecture, Primorska Summer Festival and Saltworkers’ Festival). Piran’s surroundings also offer you a wide range of daytrips to the nearby world-renowned tourist spots: the saltpans of Sečovlje and Strunjan, Portorož, the Vinakoper wine cellar, Postojna Cave, Škocjan Caves, Lipica stud farm, and many others are within easy reach.

Behind the coast is the Karst region where in the cellars of the stone houses excellent wines are poured and sold, and in the attics excellent pršut is cured in the bora wind. This gourmets’ paradise is also a heaven for lovers of the beauties of the karst underworld, for example, the Skocjan Caves (UNESCO) which boasts the 1400m long and 150m deep underground canyon of the Reka River.
