(Imlil, High Atlas)
The information below is kindly provided by the management of the Kasbah to explain their philosophy and the ideas behind the Kasbah Du Toubkal project.
The Kasbah du Toubkal is an extraordinary venture, the product of an imaginative Berber and European partnership. There is a shared belief that the beauty of the Toubkal National Park should be accessible to all who respect it. To this end the Kasbah has been transformed, using traditional methods, from the home of a Feudal Caid into an unprecedented haven; one that provides a variety of accommodation and event possibilities to meet differing requirements. The Kasbah is a welcoming environment for those seeking a comfortable mountain refuge and for those who wish for superb rooms in a stunning setting. It is also a conference centre for those who are searching for a venue that inspires, one that provides peace in a spectacular and remote location, whilst providing the best of modern equipment. The Kasbah du Toubkal is not a hotel in the traditional sense; it is more an extension of the hospitality that stems from the home of the Berbers who run it.
At last, an exotic and exciting location without having to travel half way round the world and without having to tolerate unpleasant insects and unpronounceable diseases. Just a four hour flight and a two hour car journey can put you in another world where time becomes less significant, where you can watch the sun rise and set, almost every day over mountain vistas that are more normally the preserve of artists and poets; where the stars still fill the vast skies and where the pace of life is truly that of the seasons. Formerly the preserve of the mountaineer or the intrepid explorer you can now relax in comfort at the Kasbah du Toubkal set high on a rocky outcrop surrounded by walnut trees and small terraced fields and nestled at the foot of Jbel Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa. This old fortified house of the local caid or ruler has been tastefully converted, using local labour and traditional methods and materials into unique accommodation for individuals or groups. The views from every window and the whole roof terrace will quite literally take your breath away at all times of the year. No motorised traffic here, no chair lifts or fast food restaurants, no smelly or polluted city air, just the braying of the mules, the rush of water over the rocks, the sounds of the villagers living their lives and the ethereal call to prayer from the local Mosque echoing over the valleys and bouncing off the rock walls. Words and pictures cannot do justice to either the Kasbah or its location, and neither is it possible to describe the friendliness of the people in the local villages who will pass the time of day with you, or leave you alone to enjoy the seclusion of your own thoughts, but who will just as happily invite you into their houses for tea or put on a festival of local music and dance purely for the pleasure they get from the occasion.
“The scenery is magnificent. The friendliness and consideration of the staff are outstanding and the Hammam was terrific after the trek to Toubkal. One of the most enjoyable experiences in my two and a half years in Morocco .”
Anthony Layden British Ambassador Rabat 2001
This is a location ideal for a wide range of groups from artists to poets, from walkers to mountaineers, from photographers to musicians, from naturalists to bird watchers, from old to young, from seekers of peace to seekers of pleasure, from those who want to run an in-service training course without any distractions to those who want to give something back to the world through local community projects. This is less like a hotel and more like a large house where you are in control of what you do, how you do it and when you do it. There is electricity and plenty of hot and cold water, showers and flushing toilets and a traditional Hammam (steam bath). There are communal rooms for eating and meeting plus some individual rooms for privacy if you desire it. There are large and small galleried bedrooms or, if you prefer, sleep on one of the terraces under the stars.
The Kasbah is accessed from Marrakech international airport via a one and a half hour drive, to the village of Imlil. It is then a short walk through walnut groves to the commanding position at 1800 metres above sea level, which unobtrusively looks out over three major valleys carved out of majestic rocky mountains rising to 4000 metres. This is the home of eleven villages of the Ait Mizane tribe of the High Atlas. Not a lost or uncivilised world but certainly one where you can lose yourself just as easily by sitting on the sunny lawns inside the Kasbah walls as you can by undertaking a two day climb of a 4000 metre peak. A world where you can take a mule or a mountain bike into the next village or the next valley for a few hours or for a few days. The Kasbah has 10 en-suite rooms, one apartment, 3 family rooms and a conference room for up to 100. The kasbah can be hired outright for large special occasion as can the 3 bedroomed Garden Complex. You can organise your own time completely or we can provide a range of options for you. Your group can be self-led or accompanied by a European or local guide. You can incorporate a stay at the Kasbah with a further voyage of discovery in Morocco or it can be an end in itself. Only occasionally in life do you really know that you have been somewhere special and, although you might stay in places which are as exotic, you are unlikely to surpass the experience of the kasbah and the memories will remain forever. More than a place to stay an experience.
