Porto Santo
View on to Porto Santa from the Atlantic
The island of Porto Santo lies approximately 40 km to the northeast of Madeira; in contrast to its neighbour it has a desert island feel with arid landscape and a spectacular 9km beach. The beach is the island's main attraction and although tourism has been based mainly on those arriving from Madeira for day trips, the island now has direct flights from the UK and a range of excellent hotels.  
Long golden beaches are a big bonus on Porto Santo
The island is serviced by boat (2 1/2 hours) and air (15 minutes) from Madeira. 2008 saw the start of a new flight from London Gatwick direct to Porto Santo. Accommodation is concentrated along the impressive 9km stretch of beach and the small capital, Vila Baleira. In our opinion, Porto Santo is ideal for a relaxing beach holiday.  
Porto Santo (Holy Port) was discovered by Portuguese explore Zarco in 1418 and was once home to Christopher Columbus. Vila Baleira is a picturesque town with traditional Portuguese architecture and tropical vegetation; it is also home to the Porto Santo museum formerly Columbus’s house.
