Levada Walking Short Break
Levada walking is a popular activity on Madeira. Levadas are water channels hollowed out of the ground or carved into rock which go under mountains and along valleys. This network was begun by the first Portuguese settlers who found it an ideal way of getting abundant water from the central mountains to cultivated land in the south. This water flow is controlled by sluices, operated by levadeiros, who ensure that farmers get equal supplies of water . They are also responsible for keeping the levadas clean. This unique irrigation system extends over 1335 miles and is therefore an excellent way of exploring Madeira’s interior.

Not all levadas are possible for walkers but a substantial proportion of these irrigation channels have reasonable and/or well-maintained paths alongside providing excellent opportunities to explore the Madeiran countryside. Some levadas can be walked by beginners but many involve unprotected vertiginous sections or pass through tunnels so care should be taken to prepare and research well before undertaking a particular route or perhaps consider taking an orgainsed small group excursion such as the ones included below. This is also useful as many walks are end to end and would involve extensive use of public transport or taxis to return to base. As an example of the accommodation we offer, the Quinta Perestrello is located in a prestigious area of the capital; between Reid’s and the Savoy. The main house has been carefully restored and a new wing of rooms built alongside. The furnishings reflect the traditional décor of Madeira's heritage, and care has been taken to preserve the intimate atmosphere associated with the Quintas. |
