Fira

Sailing into Fira the first sight is of sheer black cliffs rising up from the sea - you might struggle to make out the sign of any civilisation. It is certainly a dramatic arrival and then the fun begins - how to get to the village several hundred metres up? There are three ways: for the more energetic there are 600 steps, the less energetic may prefer a donkey to take the strain or, the most popular choice, a cable car. Fira does become quite busy in the summer with cruise ship visitors who enjoy its delights for a few hours. Fira has several excellent museums, beautiful churches and restored Venetian mansions, enough to keep a keen photographer content for many hours!
