Fira
Arriving by boat to Santorini is certainly dramatic - sheer black cliffs rise out of the sea with tiny white buildings perched on top. Fira is the capital of Santorini and lies 260m above the Caldera, opposite the volcano. It has several excellent museums, beautiful churches and restored Venetian mansions, enough to keep a photographer busy for a few hours! There are also plenty of shops, selling souvenirs of the island, and many jewellery shops. 580 steps rise from the old port to the town, helpfully each step is numbered! If this all seems a bit strenuous for you then there is a cable car!
Fira can get quite crowded in the summer with backpackers and cruise ship visitors.
