Athens was the most famous city of the ancient world and has long been considered as the birthplace of democracy and civilization. A home of writers, philosophers and politicians, it remains equally relevant in today's world; when the Olympic Games returned in 2004 the world saw a vibrant and modern Athens. Today, Athens has 4 million inhabitants, however the city centre is actually very compact and easy to get around, due in no small part to the excellent metro and tram system. To get an idea of the scale of the city it is good to head up to the top of Lycabettus Hill - on a clear day you can see across to the Saronic Islands.

		You could easily spend several hours at the Acropolis with its temple to the goddess of wisdom and city patron, Athena. The second most important archaeological site is the Greek Agora or market place; Athens also has its Roman Agora, funded by Julius Caesar and dedicated to Athena. Roman ruins can still be seen in the Temple of Zeus and Hadrian's Arch. Athens is a bustling city with a fantastic range of shops, both modern and traditional - head to Plaka, the old town, with its myriad of narrow alleys for a good choice of souvenirs. You will also find some glorious Byzantine churches around here. The Royal Palace provides a unique photo opportunity with the ornately dressed Evzones, their kilts with 400 pleats, one for each year of Turkish domination. There is certainly much to occupy several days in the city and Athens is truly a delight in the winter when most of the visitors have departed.

The Saronic Islands are just a short hop on a 'flying dolphin' (hydrofoil) from Athens; we will arrange a private transfer service from your Athens hotel and pre-booked tickets. Many people combine Aegina as a twin centre with Athens to package together a tour of the classical sites with a relaxing beach holiday without too much overland travel.

Aegina, once the capital of Greece, is dominated by Aegina Town, a traditional town full of character. Greek tavernas and fish restaurants mingle with chic patisseries - ideal places to people watch! Shop for fresh fruit and vegetables from the small boats along the harbour or escape the bustle of the harbour side by taking a wander through the quieter back streets. The main beach is within easy reach and has shallow water - ideal for children. Rocky coves and secluded bays are also not far away and make an excellent base for snorkelling or fishing.
