Aegina Town is a very traditional Greek town. The main beach is within easy reach of our properties and has shallow water - ideal for children. Rocky coves and secluded bays are also not far away and make an excellent base for snorkelling or fishing. Aghia Marina is a more developed resort but still has a strong Greek character and a safe, gently shelving beach for children. The rest of Aegina island can easily be explored by hire car or by local bus.
Perdika, lying at the south of the island, should not be missed especially if you like to eat fresh fish, for the pedestrianised waterfront is lined with fish tavernas, some of whom have been there for generations. The village looks towards the islet of Moni, a conservation area, which can be reached in about 15 minutes by small boat from Perdika harbour. Many make this short journey to swim in its wonderfully clear waters.
On the road to Aghia Marina you will not fail to miss the cathedral of Agios Nektarios. This took many years to complete and was finally inaugurated in 1994; it is said to be the largest church in Greece. About a kilometre from here is the ghost village of Paleohora. The village was built up the hillside in the 9th century to give protection against pirate raids, however it was all but destroyed in the 16th century and finally abandoned two hundred years later after Greek Independence. In its heyday there were 365 churches but only a handful now remain.
The most famous monument on the island is the Temple of Aphaia, which forms a perfect triangle with the Parthenon and the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion. This lies above Aghia Marina in a fragrant pine forest and many say that it is one of the most complete ancient buildings in Greece.

This island, once the capital of Greece, is dominated by Aegina Town, a traditional town full of character. Greek tavernas and fish restaurants mingle with chic patisseries - ideal places to people watch! Shop for fresh fruit and vegetables from the small boats along the harbour or escape the bustle of the harbour side by taking a wander through the quieter back streets. |
A small resort in comparison with many others in Greece, Aghia Marina consists of a main street along which you find a good selection of restaurants, cafes and bars. The main beach lies just below the main street and is gently shelving - ideal for children. Watersports are also available and there are a few restaurants on the beach if you don't fancy straying too far for lunch! |
