Place me on Sunium's marbled steep, |
Where nothing, save the waves and I, |
May hear our mutual murmurs sweep; |
There, swan-like, let me sing and die: |
A land of slaves shall ne'er be mine- |
Dash down yon cup of Samian wine! |
... wrote Lord Byron in the 19th century, who visited the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion and carved his name on one of the pillars! The temple has an impressive position giving views, on a clear day, to Kea and Kythnos, Aegina and the Peloponnese. What's more it forms a perfect triangle with the Parthenon in Athens and the Temple of Aphaia on Aegina. On this tour you can enjoy 'Sunium's marbled steep'.
Drive along the coast road past the wonderful beaches of Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza to arrive at Cape Sounion, the most southerly point of the Attica region. It was here that the Athenians chose to erect this white marbled temple deciated to Poseidon, god of the seas. From here, at certain times of the year, the sunsets are legendary. The temple dates from the 5th century BC and was mentioned by Homer in the Odyssey. After visiting the temple you have time to walk on the rocky promontory of Sounion before heading back to Athens.
Included is a complimentary pick up and drop off service from your Athens hotel.
