Leave Athens behind for the day and head aong the coastal road, along the Saronic Gulf to the Corinth Canal, which connects the Ionian Sea with the Aegean Sea. Opened in 1893 this canal helped to establish Piraeus as a major Mediterranean port and shipping centre. If you're fortunate enough you may see a ship passing through during your short stop at the canal.
Onwards to Mycenae, the Homeric city of the Atreides, the city 'rich in gold' of the ancient poets. Mycenae was discovered in the late 19th century by Schliemann who believed that Homer's epics were based on fact. Here you can visit the Lion's Gate, entrance to the Citadel and the Cyclopean Walls, so called as they were so huge that Greeks thought that they must have been constructed by the Cyclops! The Royal Tombs, also excavated by Schliemann, are also included on this tour.
Depart for Nafplion through the fertile plains of Argolis. This exceptionally pretty town, briefly a capital of modern Greece, nestles at the foot of a cliff, crowned by the mighty Palamidi Fortress. It is possible to climb to the top, however there are almost 900 steps!
After lunch (optional) the final stop for the day is at Epidavrus to visit the theatre, dating from the 4th century BC. The theatre has astonishingly good acoustics and is the venue for the summer classical dramas in the Athens Festival.
You return to Athens by the National Highway, arriving back early evening.
