Athens is one of the most magical cities in the world. The city, with its 4.5 million inhabitants, is at the social, political and cutural heart of Greece. Today many come to enjoy its ancient treasures - the Acropolis; the museums including the new Acropolis Museum; the Agora, the ancient market place; Hadrian's Arch and the Temple of Zeus. Other, more modern, buildings delight - the wonderful neo-classical buildings near Syntagma and the Parliament buildings on the square with the uniquely dressed 'Evzones' guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Alongside this is modern Athens, the city which hosted one of the most successful Olympic Games of recent times.

Athens was the most famous city of the ancient world and has long been considered as the birthplace of democracy and civilization. A home of writers, philosophers and politicians, it remains equally relevant in today's world.

The city centre is actually very compact and is extremely easy to get around, due in no small part to the excellent metro and tram system. To get an idea of the scale of the city it is good to head up to the top of Lycabettus Hill - on a clear day you can see across to the Saronic Islands.
