Athens is one of the most magical cities in the world. The city, with its 4.5 million inhabitants, is at the social, political and cutural heart of Greece. Athens was the most famous city of the ancient world and has long been considered as the birthplace of democracy and civilization. A home of writers, philosophers and politicians, it remains equally important in today's world.

The city centre is actually very compact and is extremely easy to get around, due in no small part to the excellent metro and tram system. To get an idea of the scale of the city it is good to head up to the top of Lycabettus Hill - on a clear day you can see across to the Saronic Islands.
